Sheffield Guide:
Sheffield, located in Yorkshire, is one of the largest cities in the UK as well as Europe with a large population. There is much to see and do here as it is a cosmopolitan as well as industrial city with many great sources of entertainment for residents and visitors alike.
Things to see and do in Sheffield
Make a visit to the Millennium Galleries, some of which are the largest of their kind in the country. Visit the Craft and Design gallery to enjoy conventional and contemporary works of craftsmen and designers. The metal industries of the city are depicted well in the Metalwork Gallery. There is also the Ruskin Gallery and the Special Exhibition Gallery, both of which work around different themes. The atmosphere has been made quite exciting and comfortable with the use of escalators and a set out route so the trip isn’t too tiring and no one misses out! Also surprisingly, entry is free.
Next to the Millenium Galleries is the Winter Garden which is open everyday. Here you will find a conservatory of glass and timber as well as palm trees and other exotic plants. The conservatory’s temperatures are handled based on what they contain, but generally kept warm in winter and cool in the summer. There is also a coffee bar where you can si down and enjoy the views with outdoor seating available as well.
Close to the Town Hall are the Peace Gardens, which are right in the centre of the city and in fact quite close to the Winter Gardens mentioned above, as well. The scenery is beautiful with intricately designed fountains to create a wonderful environment as well as the use of grassed areas. This makes it a particularly popular location in the summer for people to lay back and enjoy the few moments of good weather!
A great combination of British, European, Chinese and Islamic art is maintained in Graves Gallery located in Surrey Street and open everyday except on Sundays.
The best of Sheffield’s attractions are concentrated in Tudor Square, which is pedestrianised for ease of getting around. This is where the Lyceum Theatre which dates back to Victorian times is located, as is the Crucible Theatre where World Snooker Championships have been held. The Central Library is another notable outlet which was set up in the 1930s and has a great range of books both in terms of themes and numbers. Many shows are also held in the Library Theatre, most of which are produced and organised by local drama groups.
